Conway congratulates The Gathering on 1,000 confirmed events for 2013

Fine Gael Clare Senator, Martin Conway, has today (Monday) welcomed the news that 1,000 events have already been confirmed for The Gathering 2013 saying it is testament to the hard work of local community groups and The Gathering organisers that the initiative is showing such signs of success at this stage. The Gathering, which is the biggest ever tourism event undertaken by any Government in the history of the State, is designed to attract as many people as possible to pay a visit to Ireland next year, having significant knock-on effects for the local and national economy.

“The huge number of events that have already been confirmed as part of The Gathering is down to the hard work of those who have gotten behind it. It is also a reflection of the stead in which Ireland is held overseas. I have no doubt that we will continue to see an increase in the number of events being organised in a bid to bring 325,000 additional tourists to our shores in 2013 as we draw closer to the end of the year.

“I would like to congratulate the team at The Gathering 2013 for what is already a remarkable achievement. Their dedication, time and effort are already paying huge dividends for the Irish tourism industry and I am very excited about the real possibilities which will follow this phenomenal event.

“I would like to see many more events built around this great national movement and I am calling on every parish in the country that has not yet arranged an event for to do so without delay. We all have a unique opportunity to do something special in 2013 and at the same time protect and create jobs in the tourism and hospitality industry. All sporting organisations, big and small, have a chance to get involved and to be part of something really exciting.

“I would also like to acknowledge the real commitment of the GAA and other sporting organisations so far to The Gathering 2013 and wish them well with their planned events. I would particularly like to encourage all sporting organisations with overseas memberships, in particular golf clubs, to roll up their sleeves and join this exciting project.

“Again, many congratulations to the dedicated team at The Gathering 2013 for reaching this very important milestone. I wish them every success in the months ahead.”
