Conway welcomes €7 million funding for expansion of Disability Activation Project

Fine Gael Senator for Clare, Martin Conway, has today (Friday) welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton TD, to expand the Disability Activation Project to assist people with disabilities access employment. The initiative, which is jointly funded by the European Social Fund and the Department of Social Protection, will involve creating links between employers and people with disabilities to enable full participation in the labour market.

“I welcome the expansion of this initiative and believe that it will be of assistance to people with disabilities in eliminating barriers to employment, education and development opportunities.

“The expansion of this initiative represents an important investment in supporting inclusion of everyone in society which will be very beneficial to employers and people with disabilities.

“This initiative is one of a range of programmes which are available to people with disabilities to help them gain much needed mainstream work experience in real jobs and real communities. The Willing Able Mentoring programme, which is also funded by the Department of Social Protection, is seeking to make employment practices disability friendly and has to date provided work placements for over 175 graduates with disabilities with major employers in the Irish labour market.

“The Government is committed to supporting people with disabilities to participate more fully in society and to facilitate the building of inclusive workplaces and I look forward to seeing the benefits that today’s announcement brings to the lives of people with disabilities.”
