Conway welcomes speed limit audit

Fine Gael Clare Senator, Martin Conway, has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar, of a nationwide audit of speed limits. Deputy Conway added that the audit is long overdue, as many speed limits are totally inappropriate because they are either too high or too low.

“I have long campaigned for a nationwide audit on speed limits. In County Clare alone, I know of dozens of speed limits which are inaccurate and which make no sense.

“While I was a member of Clare County Council between 2004 and 2011, I found it extremely frustrating trying, in vain, to have speed limits changed where there was clearly a case for an alteration to be made. I have no doubt that many Councillors throughout Ireland will be delighted with this initiative from Minister Varadkar.

“I am calling on all local authorities and the National Roads Authority to work together in consultation with public representatives and the Road Safety Authority to ensure that this audit is both effective and comprehensive. We have had significant success in reducing road deaths in recent years. I believe that this initiative by the Minister will add significantly to road safety in this country.”
